From the early 1800s onwards, al roofing has been a component in the US. Although technology has changed in the past however the core concepts behind roofing have remained the same. This video provides an review of the past of asphalt roofing.
Asphalt shingling makes up about 70% of roofs in Canada and in the US. The lifespan of asphalt shingles is between 10 to 20 years. They are then disposed into landfills when they wear out. They account for between 5 and 10 percent and 10 percent of the landfill waste. There are more environmentally friendly materials therefore why asphalt is being used so often?
Asphalt shingles have a long lifespan. The production of asphalt was expensive before modern gasoline production. Asphalt was the result of older methods in petroleum refining. When these processes became more efficient, production of asphalt decreased. It was a sign that asphalt required to be manufactured, and the price went up.
The low cost of asphalt has made it widely used for roofs. However, manufacturers made asphalt less durable to maintain lower prices. The asphalt shingles are now made mostly of fiberglass more than asphalt.
